Marie wrote last night to say that her boss in the Embassy isn’t motivated to work on her extension, so it seems we won’t be staying another year in Bhutan. Part of me doesn’t want to believe it. Surely it’s more work for him to find a replacement and arrange the transfer, paying the shipping costs, arranging visas etc than just arranging a salary increase to which her extension would entitle her. But then, the embassy staff don’t seem to think like normal people.
The other part of me, which registers the truth, is in denial. I’ve loved living here and will be sad to leave. It will be a lot of work to restart the company in another place and I’m not sure I’ll have the motivation without some ready clients. While things are moving that way, I don’t know when they’ll be ready to start paying for a service. And then there’s the uncertainty over where to go. Marie would like to do a PhD after Bhutan, but it’s probably too late to organise now. She could try for another development job, but that probably means another 2 years minimum before she can get to study.
What to do la?
