Australia’s First Female Prime Minister

If you blinked, you would have missed it. I don’t watch the news and I don’t pay a lot of attention to the news on the radio, but I usually keep up with events through office chatter and the word on the street. Two weeks ago, Prime Minister Rudd resigned due to a slump in his ratings, despite previously being the second most popular Prime Minister ever. It came as a bit of a shock to most people, but everyone went about their business when Julia Gillard took over. Very little was made of the fact that she is Australia’s first female Prime Minister.

I wonder whether that will change anything though. Gillard basically turfed Rudd out of the party leadership role, leaving him no room to move as Prime Minister. Is a woman that aggressive going to be any different to the male leaders we’ve had in the past?
